Preserving Australian History

Protecting NSW Parliament’s Documented Heritage

NSW Parliament has been working to digitise its “Tabled Papers” series, which dates back to 1900. This initiative aims to protect and preserve these invaluable historical documents for future generations.

Project Scope

GMS Digital was engaged to carry out the digitisation of 983 Joint Volumes and several thousand boxes of Tabled Papers. Our team faced the challenging task of scanning numerous fragile books, including multi-volume editions and individually numbered documents.

The Solution

Given the age and fragility of the Joint Volumes and Tabled Papers, the project required the use of manual scanning techniques and cautious handling of all documents. A combination of roller feed, flatbed, large format, and overhead camera contactless scanning was used to digitise the materials without compromising the condition of the original documents. All items were scanned in 400dpi colour and output to either TIFF and/or PDF formats with OCR processing to 95% or greater accuracy.
